There are two models of rotary screw air compressors on the market today: oil-injected and oil-free. Oil-injected rotary air compressors use oil injected into the screw compression chamber to lubricate the bearings, remove the heat of compression and seal the area between the two rotating screws to efficiently produce clean, cool compressed air. This process is sometimes known as an “oil bath” or “oil-flooded” lubricated compression. Oil-free rotary air compressors, on the other hand, do not flood their compression chambers with oil; rather, they operate at high speeds and very high temperatures with a dynamic seal and multi-staging to achieve respectable efficiencies.

Oil-injected compressors will require more routine maintenance, but will have a lower total cost of ownership as compared to an oil-free screw compressor.
